GORSE GETS HEALTHY

BIG 3 update – Volleyball

“Success is a result of consistent practice of winning skills and actions. There is nothing miraculous about the process. There is no luck involved” – Bill Russell.

April Camp
Approximately 60 students took part in the annual April half term camp held at The Ruth Gorse Academy. We were delighted to work with these committed students and ran competitive games throughout the week. Upon securing the Happy Holidays funding, alongside Karate, we were happy to provide free lunches to students taking part. We were also impressed to see our EHC captain, Destiny, spend time coaching the younger students. Please see the attached video of the last day of camp.

Battle of the Easter Egg
Leeds Gorse hosted Scotland U20’s team and England North U19s over the Easter Holidays. Several of our students were involved in the tournament playing for the LG U16s team. It was a massive success and offered the opportunity for our students to compete against international players.
The Scottish National Team’s coach commented: ”Our guys loved the format and the opportunity. The level of the competition and your facilities were perfect.”
We are looking forward for the future cooperation and opportunities between Gorse and Scottish Volleyball.

National Finals
This weekend, some of our top students will be competing at the NATIONAL FINALS at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering! On Saturday, the LGVC U16 boys will compete against London Sharks at 4pm and on Sunday, the LGVC U15 boys will take on Richmond at 11am. After narrowly missing out last year, we were determined to make it to the finals this year. We are so proud of the work the boys have put in and how far they have come. We would love to have as much support and noise as possible! If anyone would like to attend, please let Pete or Elaine know ASAP.

Good luck to Essay Mulubrhan, Emmanuel Oretoye, Bartek Leniart, Joshua Cosgrove, Adam Chan, Ioannis Dimitrakopoulus, Naby Bangoura, Kishore Arumugam and Ariel Nsanja!

Volleyball England Beach Performance Director Visit
On Friday 31/03, the Volleyball England Beach Performance Director, Kirk Pitman, came to visit and observe our volleyball programme in action. He was blown away by how successful The Gorse Volleyball Club has been in such a short period of time as well as the number of students taking part, our facilities, support from the trust and teachers’ encouragement, involvement and knowledge of the sport.
He will be advocating for GORSE with the governing body and would like to work closely with us in the future, especially when we launch our beach programme. Kirk already even scouted a couple students who have been invited to the Youth Commonwealth Games trials in May!

Volleyball England Futures
On 30/04, Volleyball England will host a ‘Volleyball Futures’ camp at TRGA. Volleyball Futures supports the development of young athletes who aspire to play for England. Young athletes will experience a National Team camp environment and find out what it is like to train like an England athlete. At the camp the players will have three volleyball training sessions led by England coaches, get advice on how to improve, opportunities to win prizes and all will receive a Volleyball Futures T-shirt. Top students in years 6-8 will be selected to attend.
