Very excitingly, we can announce work on the Gorse Boat House has finally begun. The first shovel broke ground last Thursday as we laid the concrete foundations for the boatshed. Gorse staff, students and parents have been waiting for this facility for a long time, so it was great to finally see some progress.
Although we have already been granted planning consent for the boathouse, the technicalities of planning approval mean that Leeds City Council are keeping us waiting a little longer whilst they rubber stamp a few minor details. But that doesn’t mean we can’t get started with the early stages of the build. We are pushing the council hard for the full green light and hope to be in a position to go rowing by the summer.
We are also just about to place an order for 14 brand new boats, dozens of oars, electronics and other equipment. Those boats will be built over the next few months before being shipped to the UK in time for the opening of the boathouse.
We know all the students, teachers and coaches have been putting in the hours on the rowing machines. We are so excited for you to show us what you can do on the water.
We hope you understand that a project that is as complicated and ambitious as Gorse’s rowing programme takes time to set up and we are very grateful for all your patience and incredible hard work in the meantime. Gorse students will show everyone what they’re made of when they get the chance, and we look forward to giving you everything you need to be the best you can be.
