The new volleyball programme has made major strides since launching in September. All primary students across The GORSE Trust Academies have now been introduced to the sport. The students have enjoyed volleyball so much that each academy has now added an extra-curricular volleyball club for further development and play. Some youngsters are even coming through to the Leeds Volleyball Club Under 11s beginner sessions held on Friday evenings at The Ruth Gorse Academy.

Additionally, this year, five of the six starting players of the Leeds Volleyball Club Under Girls’ 16s team are from The GORSE Trust Academies – Ruth Gorse, Cockburn and Farnley Academy. During the first round of the National Championships, these young ladies went undefeated finishing 3-0 for the day, and progressed to the next round. The Leeds Volleyball Club Boys’ Under 18s team also progressed to the next round of the Volleyball England Junior National Championships. Seeing GORSE students feed into these competitive teams is inspiring, and shows great potential for the future of the GORSE Volleyball programme.

Another benefit of being partnered with the Leeds Volleyball Club is access to working with the England Men’s National Volleyball team. This December The Ruth Gorse Academy will be hosting the team for training sessions, as well as opportunities for BTEC students to attend trainings and interview players. Team England has also agreed to host highly sought after junior training sessions only available to GORSE students and Leeds VC juniors.

The GORSE Volleyball programme wishes everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! We look forward to sharing more exciting updates in the new year.
